For the Record 2011

November, 2011 A brilliant night was had by all the Curtin design students and their friends and family. It was fantastic to see all the talent and creativity on show and to cap off five whole years of study. I was even lucky enough to win an award for excellence in the Graphic Design major, along with my other brilliant classmates, Corey James, Christopher Terpsis, Ben Siero, Matt Allpress and the lovely Maegan Brown, who was awarded Graduate of the Year (check out their lovely work). Below are some photos from the night:

The Usual Suspects Tea Co.

October, 2011 The Usual Suspects Tea Co. gourmet tea packaging. The Usual Suspects Tea Co. is a brand of gourmet teas based in Melbourne, Australia. While the brand specialises in unique and high quality teas, it is also differentiated by having a very quirky, satirical and tongue-in-cheek personality throughout its packaging. The Usual Suspects Tea Co. is a light-hearted matching of tea varieties with some of the more noxious people from the annals of history, with a slightly retro aesthetic to convey the more humorous and quirky nature of the brand. The idea is for consumers to collect their favourite demented despots, deadly dictators, devious damsels and diabolic drug barons, all while enjoying a steaming cup of delicious tea!

Landsborough

October, 2011 Landsboroughannual report. Landsborough is a chain of retail stores worldwide, specialising in camping equipment, travel apparel and accessories, mapping systems and equipment for remote travel and four-wheel driving. Founded in Melbourne in 1997, the company is named after William Landsborough, who in the mid-1800s is credited as the first person to cross Australia North to South from coast to coast in search of the famously ill-fated explorers, Burke and Wills. The brand embodies the spirit of adventure and exploration and pays homage to its Australian roots with earthy colours, references to navigation symbols and the use of traditional camping equipment materials in its branding, which related back to William Landsborough’s original journey across Australia.

The Metropol

September, 2011 The Metropol riverside apartments identity. The Metropol is a new development on the Swan River in the heart of East Perth. This luxurious tower of modern apartments overlooks the river and a new waterfront precinct featuring cafes, restaurants, bars, shops and moorings. Designed to suit young, cosmopolitan people who enjoy the bustle of inner-city life, The Metropol is the newest in vibrant urban living in the heart of the Perth foreshore. The location of the development next to the East Perth Power Station influenced the identity design for The Metropol, with floors and penthouses being named after famous electrical physicists throughout history. The ohm symbol is central to the brand identity, paying homage to the site’s rich history.

Sago

August, 2011 Sago bilingual publication. Sago magazine is a bilingual publication published quarterly, produced in Tokyo by a mixture of locals and ex-pats and distributed around the world. Sago reflects the growing need to bridge communication divides and embrace a more global community. By publishing the magazine in both English and Japanese, Sago is able to reach a larger audience and encourage the sharing of stories between cultures and countries. Each issue is released at the start of each Japanese season and topics covered include art, design, music, travel, film, fashion, lifestyle, food and informational content. The magazine avoids aligning itself with a specific subculture and sticks with a clean, modern style to encourage people from all backgrounds to pick up a copy.

Erlín

June, 2011 Erlín perfumery. Erlín is a boutique perfumery opening on Shafto Lane in Perth city which will be primarily known as bringing rare and quality perfumes from around the world to the Perth market. They will also stock quality soaps, make-up, skin care, hair care and beauty products, as well as home fragrances, foreign CDs, a selection of home wares and their own brand of unique fragrances, skin care, beauty products and quality teas, all made in Australia with local ingredients. Erlín provides a whole new experience for shoppers in Perth, providing a warm, intimate and friendly environment. Visitors will find a small and cozy interior with a jumble and clutter of lovely products and delightful fragrances. This tone of voice is reflected in the design for the Erlín identity – with a focus on classic and hand-crafted type in the logo design, and warm, tactile watercolour imagery throughout the packaging design.

Deadstock

April, 2011 Deadstock sneaker outlet. Deadstock is a new specialty retail store opening on Oxford Street, Leederville. The store sources both local and international fashion and design to bring to the Perth market. Deadstock will stock luxury footwear, contemporary apparel, home wares, art, design, designer toys, books and magazines. The store will also be actively involved in the local community, working with local street artists and designers to establish a direct and intimate dialogue with the market. Central to the brand identity was an extremely literal interpretation of the store’s name, with the central Hoof logo supported by secondary branding applications featuring vicious zombie farm animals. The store features a outdoor mural painted by local artists, with the zombie animals cheerfully welcoming prospective visitors as they pass by.

Vudu Black

March, 2011 Vudu Black pre-mix vodka range. The Vudu Black range includes seven distinctive flavours which differ from those already on the female-centred pre-mix market. They include guarana, ginger and yerba for more subtle, spicy flavours to appeal to a more masculine market who might not enjoy the sweet and fruity flavours that tend to be on offer. The Vudu Black range is also made from triple-distilled vodka for a much more luxurious flavour and personality. Vudu Black’s slick branding and dark colour palette make this an ideal option for both men and women who want a drink with an edge.

Vudu Fruit

March, 2011 Vudu Fruit pre-mix vodka range. The Vudu Fruit range includes seven fruity flavours that are similar to those already available on the market, however the seven flavours are all slickly branded to appeal to those who might want a more exclusive product. The sweeter and lighter range of flavours will appeal to a more feminine market, as well as inexperienced drinkers entering the alcohol market. Vudu Fruit’s slick branding and light, summery colour palette make this an ideal option for those wanting a premium vodka beverage with a sweet and fruity flavour.
